UPDATE: We have already delivered 20,000 petition signatures to Congress, but now we need to DOUBLE that! Doubling our show of support will allow the FAMILY ACT champions in Congress show their colleagues that support for the FAMILY ACT is growing quickly -- which will help them convince their colleagues to join us in passing legislation to be sure no U.S. worker has to choose between caring for their families and a paycheck.
Currently only 1 in 10 workers in the US has access to any paid family leave, which includes taking time off to care for a newborn baby or an aging parent. That means millions of us are forced to choose between caring for our families and keeping our paychecks - a choice no one should have to make.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Representative Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut have introduced a bill in Congress that would support families to provide care and keep their jobs. It's called the FAMILY Act, short for the Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act, and it would create a national paid leave program.
The FAMILY Act would allow us to receive a portion of our pay for 12 weeks if we need time away from our jobs for family or medical reasons – this would result in significant benefits for our families, businesses and economy.
The clock is ticking. Families are being forced to make choices they shouldn't have to, and we need to build momentum for this historic legislation.
Sign your name – and we'll deliver this message to your representative in Congress letting them know that your family, and millions of other American families, should not have to choose between work and providing care.
To: Members of the House, US Congress
We urge you to co-sponsor the Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act (the FAMILY Act) and stand up for working families.
Americans are struggling as our nation’s policies are not adequately addressing our health and economic needs. Millions of us are juggling full-time jobs while also caring for aging parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren or loved ones with disabilities.
Don't leave caregivers alone, forced to choose between what is best for us and our families on the one hand, and the income we need on the other. Support working families by co-sponsoring the FAMILY Act today and help it get the broad political support it needs to pass.
